الحرب الباردة كانت عبارة عن صراع سياسي بدء بعد نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية ما بين الدول الرأسمالية الغربية (الولايات المتحدة و غرب أوروبا) و الدول الشيوعية الشرقية ( الاتحاد السوفيتي ودول شرق أوروبا). وكان لكلا الطرفين قوات عسكرية كبيرة العدد أبقيت من اجل البقاء على أهبة الاستعداد للحرب، وهدد كلا الطرفين بعضهما الآخر باستخدام الأسلحة النووية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، سعى كلا الطرفين إلى معرفة أسرار بعضهما الآخر عن طريق الاستعانة بالجواسيس. وفي واقع الأمر، لم يكن هنالك أي حرب فعلية باستثناء دعم الولايات المتحدة والاتحاد السوفيتي لأطراف متنازعة مثل الحرب الكورية. وقد انتهت الحرب الباردة في أوائل التسعينيات من القرن العشرين بعد أن بدء الاتحاد السوفيتي بالانهيار.

Cold War The political conflict between the capitalist countries of the West (the US and western Europe) and the Communist countries of the East (the Soviet Union and eastern Europe) that began after World War II. Both sides had large military forces which were kept ready for war, and threatened each other with nuclear weapons. They also tried to find out each other’s secrets using spies. There was no actual fighting, except where the US and the Soviet Union supported different sides in conflicts such as the Korean War. The Cold War ended in the early 1990s after the Soviet Union had begun to break up.
